Sin City

Posted by: Nick on Thursday, January 24th, 2008

 Sin CitySin City

A comic book adaptation that is extremely slick and stylish from Frank Miller’s stories based in a morally bankrupt metropolis know as Basin City where there is a free for all of corruption with bent cops, a corrupt church and dishonest politicians run everything. The film is almost entirely in black and white leading to a classic portrayal of the pulp noir persuasion with the occasional splashes of dramatic colour; the red of a woman’s dress and lipstick, the character defining shades of someone’s eyes, or the yellow/green of a freak’s skin. This coupled with the brilliant cinematography of creepy, eerie angles, graphic and gruesome close-ups all set the premise for a visually spectacular piece. The film consists of three stories running parallel to each other but are not overly linked, however do follow a similar undertone of a grievous travesty chased up by an even worse revenge. One story involves the struggle of a veteran cop, Hartigan (Bruce Willis) ‘pushing sixty with a bum ticker’ trying to prevent a politician’s paedophile son from raping and killing a young girl. Another has Marv, a giant beast of a man who wakes next to a dead prostitute that he has been framed for killing. This beauty and the beast tale ends with the exposure of a massive cover-up involving both senators and the church and of course a city wide killing spree in the name of love and vengeance. The final story sees the journalist come private detective Dwight (Clive Owen) take on a tripped out bent cop that leads to a disruption in the delicate balance between the city cops and the down town hookers. This film is fast paced, beautiful and brilliant, with some well written lines, from Pulp-style ‘You’re running out of valley, cowboy’ to great one-liners, ‘When it comes to comforting a traumatised 11-year-old, I’m as useful as a palsy victim performing brain surgery with a pipe wrench.’

Sin City certainly takes its place among some of my favourite films and has a prised place in my DVD collection, Robert Rodriguez I salute you. Let’s just hope Sin City 2 (2009) stands to its predecessor.

How online DVD rentals works

Posted by: Nick on Thursday, January 24th, 2008

How online DVD rentals works

The majority of online DVD rentals websites work in a similar way, what follows is a general guide explaining the principles behind online DVD rental websites.

Look through the DVD rental library

Explore & search the online DVD library for DVD’s and when you find a DVD that you want to rent add the DVD to your DVD’s rental library list (just a click of the mouse will do this). The quantity of DVD’s you can have at home at any one time depends on the DVD rental plan that you chose when you signed up. DVDs are dispatched to you immediately via First Class post and should arrive at your home within 1 to 2 working days. Watch them at your leisure & when you’ve finished with your rented DVD, simply put it back in its pre-paid return envelope and drop it in a post-box. As soon as your chosen DVD rental company receives it back, they will send your next available DVD from your library list.

How long can I keep the DVD for?

Nearly all DVD rental sites allow you to keep your DVDs as long as you like and don’t charge late fees or have any set due dates. Take your time and watch your DVDs as much as you want before returning it.

How much does online DVD rental cost?

Online DVD Rentals typically offer a variety of packages, these are all based around the number of DVDs you want to have at home at any one time. As with most things in life, the more DVDs you want to borrow at once, the higher the DVD rental package is (but this works out at less per disc). We have avoided quoting any prices in this quick guide to online DVD rental, because price change quite frequently depending on what deals are available. For prices and full package details refer to the individual online DVD rental website.

Free Trials

Most of the major online DVD rental companies offer a free trial period or a pay for one month get one month free offer. The reason for this is that they all want your business so it really pays to shop around when choosing your online DVD rental supplier. You can take advantage of these DVD rental offers, generally there is no catch but do check the small print. 3 or 4 days before the end of the offer period if you decide not to carry on with the DVD rental scheme, make sure that you remember to cancel, and return any DVDs (they must be received back by the company before the last day of the offer).

What is the difference between online and shops?

Choice, Choice, Choice with the average Online DVD rentals sites having a selection of anywhere between 40 and 60,000 DVD’s to rent this can’t be matched by any shop (just imagine how big it would have to be). They also have a tendency to be cheaper due to lower running costs.

I hope you enjoyed this article if you have any comments or recommendations or would just like to share any online DVD rental experiences good, bad or ugly then please let us know.

DVD Regions

Posted by: Nick on Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008
DVD Regions
DVD Regions | Region 1 DVDs sold by our Marketplace sellers | Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE) | Global DVD region countries | Blu-ray Discs Region Encoding | High-Density (HD) Discs Region Encoding DVD Regions

The DVD region code identifies a DVD’s compatibility with the players typically sold in a particular region.

The following graphic shows the approximate location of each region. See Below for an approximate list of countries that fall into each region:

DVD regions map

Region 0 (or “region free”) is compatible with DVD players from any region.

The majority of all current titles play only in one specific region unless otherwise noted. DVDs sold by Amazon.co.uk are encoded for Region 2 or Region 0. Region 2 DVDs may not work on DVD players in other countries.

Region 1 DVDs sold by our Marketplace sellers

Region 1 discs are intended for use with standard DVD players in North America (Canada and the USA). In most instances they can also be played on compatible “multi-region” DVD players (also known as “chipped” or “region-free” players).

They also require an NTSC-compatible television. NTSC is the standard picture format in North America, and differs from the PAL format adopted in Britain and Europe. Region 1 DVDs are usually presented in NTSC format, so you should ensure that your TV is capable of reading the NTSC signal before purchasing Region 1 DVDs.

Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE)

Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE) has been added by some film studios (specifically Warner and Columbia) to selected Region 1 DVDs, with the intention of preventing these discs from playing on some multi-region DVD players. We are therefore unable to guarantee that all Region 1 discs will be compatible with all multi-region players.

Global DVD region countries
This is not a definitive list and is intended only as a guide.

DVD regions country list

Blu-ray Discs Region Encoding
Blu-ray discs may be encoded with a region code, intended to restrict the area of the world in which they can be played; similar to the DVD region codes. Blu-ray players sold in a certain region should only be able to play discs encoded for that region.

DVD regions country list
A North America, Central America, South America, Japan, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia
B Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand
C India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central and South Asia

High-Density (HD) Discs Region Encoding
There is no region coding in the existing HD DVD specification, which means that titles from any country can be played in players in any other country.

Online DVD Rental – Is it the way Of The Future

Posted by: Nick on Sunday, January 20th, 2008

DVD rental websites offer many advantageous over the “old” way of renting DVDs. For example, you get to choose from almost 60,000 different titles. Imagine the size your local DVD rental shop would have to be to carry that many DVD’s!

You get all the new releases when you want them. No more waiting to see a movie. There are no late fees whatsoever. That’s a god send to some people! There is free postage to and from your home! There are also no long term contracts and you can cancel your DVD rental membership anytime you’d like!

It’s so simple that anyone can do it! After filling out some basic information, you simply add whatever movies you’d like to see to a queue and they arrive at your home through the post! Most membership prices range from £3.99 a month to £14.99 a month. Obviously, the more expensive plans allow for you to take out more DVDs at one time.

DVD turnaround time is amazingly quick. DVDs usually arrive in the post within one or two days after ordering. And when you return DVDs, the company usually receives them in about the same time. Keep in mind you don’t pay ANY postage fees either!

You can keep the DVDs you have rented as long as you want, too. You won’t be charged any late fees at all! You can keep a rented DVD film for two months if that’s what you want to do! But of course, that makes no sense, but you can do it if you want! This prevents you from forgetting to take movies back and paying late fees that cost more than actually buying the film! The money you save from late fees each month could easily cover the cost for this service!

All in all, it’s a simple choice. For simplicity, to save money and to have a better selection: online DVD renting is the way to go and will be the way to go for years to come!

30 Days of Night

Posted by: Nick on Friday, January 18th, 2008

30daysofnightpic.jpg

30 Days of Night.

It’s now the turn of slick talking, Hollywood heart-throb, Josh Hartnett to tackle the evil creatures of the night, in yet another vampire movie. As you would have assumed from the title the vamps are not limited to just a few hours of hunting time either side of the sun, but have a full thirty days worth of play time.
The film is set in the small town of Barrow, Alaska, where it’s inhabitants are preparing for the annual thirty day sun down. As the last rays of light flicker into the horizon the town is randomly attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires, that claim to have travelled three hundred miles across the open ice and snow just to feed. No deeper reason, like opening Hell’s gates or summoning the ultimate evil, or even just ending a specific humans bloodline. Nope, this is a pure orgy of blood, violence, and razor sharp teeth.
After the initial raids a small group of survivors led by the town’s sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) and his estranged wife Stella Oleson (Melissa George) play a daring game of cat and mouse that, if not over drawn, is very well portrayed. All working towards the final showdown where our lead character has to sacrifices himself for the remaining survivors, with a touching end scene as the sun at long last breaks the thirty days of night.
Overall I am still unsure how to rate this film. The vampires are horrific and stylish, both in their movements and grotesque foreign tongue. The lack of depth in the plot and character development, almost works in the film’s favour as it plunges right for the jugular with action and gore, but still leaves you with an eerie sense of emptiness. Though 30 Days of Night is not a particularly bad film, I cannot stop the word ‘boring’ coming to mind. I shall certainly wait to rent this one on DVD before my purchase.

I am legend.

Posted by: Nick on Friday, January 18th, 2008

iamlegend-poster.jpg  With so many great films released throughout 2007, it is arguably December 26th that brings audiences a movie which defines and updates the Sci-Fi genre. As more and more fears of virus’s and epidemics creep into our society, the film sees director, Fracis Lawrence take this concept to a new level. At the start of the film the viewer is informed of the remarkable triumph over cancer as scientists have finally found a cure. However, as the narration progress’s it becomes clear that this man made ‘cure’ has developed into a virus which infects the blood stream and in return causes the subjects to become blood lusting creatures of the night, ‘dark seekers’ to give them their official title in the film. The virus spreads throughout New York City, infecting all but 1% of the population including the films main protagonist Robert Neville, played by Will Smith. It is through the character of Robert, an ex military scientist attempting to find a cure, that the plot unfolds into a fight for the existence of humanity. Alongside his only friend Sam, his pet dog given to him before his wife and daughter die, Robert sets about eliminating the virus, restoring peace and hope to the subjects. For the past three years the two have searched the streets of New York looking for answers, whilst keeping normality in his everyday life. This is seen through his visits to the local dvd rental shop, where he has placed manikins to imitate human beings both as customers and employees. This continues until the ‘dark seekers’ set a trap capturing Will Smith and iam.bmpthrough his escape, Sam is bitten by one of the infected dogs. As Robert rushes home to inject Sam with what he believes may be a cure, the audience is left feeling distressed as they watch an equally upset Robert kill his only friend. This evidently paves the way for our hero to give up all hope and we watch as he drives his car into a group of ‘dark seekers’. As the creatures attempt to attack Robert it is in true Hollywood style that he is saved by a unknown female fellow survivor and taken back to his hideout home where they are followed by the enemy. The ‘dark seekers’ begin to attack the house forcing the survivors to retreat to the basement where Robert conducts his research, experimenting on captured creatures. The characters come face to face with a one of Roberts subjects that appears to be reacting positively to the injected serum. Realising he may of found the cure Robert takes a sample of the subjects blood and requests that his female companion ensures it reaches a camp set up in Vermont for any survivors. With his new friends safe Robert waits until the ‘dark seekers’ have broken into the room and throws a grenade into the middle of them killing himself as well. As the audience watch the fellow survivor reach her destination a voice over informs the viewer of how Robert Neville gave his life for the sake of humanity. This is an aspect of the film which left me questioning why? Whilst a theme of loyalty to his quest and sector, he was assigned to New York City when in the military, ran throughout the film, i can’t help but feel that his life was wasted at the end. He could of thrown the grenade and left with the others to continue his research. It may be argued that with his quest finally over he is able to rejoin his wife and child.Although the concept of this film is no stranger to film goers, it does provide an emotional roller coaster as the viewer urges Robert not to give up hope and keep fighting. With a very emotional scene in the dvd rental shop it may be forgiven for its extremely poor CGI. Unlike 28 weeks later and 30 days of night, which use actors as the creatures, this movie opts for CGI effects and the ‘dark seekers’ lose the familiarity the viewer holds with the use of real actors. By using CGI the creatures become dehumanized, therefore, we view them as ‘monsters’ and have no real connection or feeling for them. However, the film is a must see for all Will Smith and Bob Marley fans!!You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Surfs Up

Posted by: Nick on Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Surfs Up surfsuppic.jpg

Surfs Up is the animated ‘mockumentary’ following a young penguin called Cody Maverick from his home town of Shiverpool, to the ‘Big Z Memorial Surfing Competition’ on Pen Gu Island. Along Cody’s journey he meets a whole host of colourful characters, such as Chicken Joe, a stoned-hippy surfing chicken that is entering a penguin surfing competition, and Cody’s love interest Lani, a female penguin lifeguard. Cody surfs for the honour of this fallen hero Big Z, but upon arriving at Pen Gu Island he finds Big Z’s name being disgraced by the current champion, the infamous Tank Evans. After Tank publicly embarrasses him, Cody takes off into the jungle where he meets Geek, a loner, hermit of a penguin who turns out to be non other than the long lost Big Z. A training montage or two later, and several well drummed home life lessons, Cody is ready to go back and face the competition.Cody (Shia LaBeouf from Transformers) is followed around in a rough, uncut, documentary style using an innovative filming technique where the layout department invented a special motion-capture camera system to give the illusion that the movie was actually being made with a real hand-held video camera. The animators created whole islands that were projected down into rooms where the camera operator, using the motion-capture system, could walk around a virtual world. I highly recommend watching this special feature on the DVD.Surfs Up has raised the bar for animated works of all genres, its clean, crisp imagery, and witty dialect make it a must see for people of all ages. You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem

Posted by: Nick on Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

avp2pic.jpgAliens vs. Predator: Requiem

The long awaited sequel to 2004’s Alien vs. Predator is finally over, but was it worth it? This film picks up where the previous AVP left off, with the birth of a Predator-Alien hybrid, a newly-born PredAlien, causing the Predator ship to crash near a small American town. Shortly after this a father and his son out on a hunting trip fall prey to the notorious alien facehugger and the carnage commences, and when a Predator receives data about the crash on his home planet, he comes to Earth. Now we have the all the key players on the field the film flows as you would expect. Lots of blood and gore and dim lit sets. The only alteration is the ending, this time the predator does not self destruct. There is however still the trademark, big bang at the end; the National Guard is called in, and a plan is set in motion to destroy the town with a nuclear device as the alien infestation can not be contained. So how would I rate it?I would give it a 6-7/10 and would advise waiting to rent this film on DVD. I have read lots of reviews on AVP2 already and do agree there are some plot holes and the film most certainly is not about to pick up a hand full of awards. But I have to ask these people who slate this film so much what they actually expected from it!?It has been spawned from two, hugely successful, but now dated and tired franchises, and should be put to bed. This new fad of trying to revive old classics is rarely/never going work *coughs* Starwars…Personally I feel AVP1 and 2 are best left to be rented for a night in, with lots of beer and takeaway. You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video
